Dogs have sensitive paws which can get burned and can become painful. Asphalt is hottest in the in the early afternoon and the middle of the day. It’s best to avoid asphalt and concrete as much as possible during those times.
-During the early hours in the morning until mid-morning and close to sunset or later are the best times are the coolest times when asphalt and concrete will be coolest.
-Try to walk in shady areas. Seek grassy areas because they are cooler and gentle on the paws.
According to the Florida SPCA, “The 5 Second Rule: Put the back of your hand on the pavement, if you cannot hold it there for 5 seconds it is too hot to walk. If the asphalt is so hot you could probably fry an egg on it, then it can burn your dog’s feet. Also keep in consideration certain dog’s pads, especially puppies are not as adaptable to heat and may not be able to stand even temperatures you can.”
Physical signs that your dog’s paws are irritated or burnt:
- Dry, rough, and/or flakey paws
- Cuts or abrasions
- Redness or darkening of skin on or around paw pads
- Blisters
- Peeling paw pads
- Wounds or irritation on paw pads
- Infections on paw pads
- Redness
- Part of the pad is missing.
Behaviors that indicate a problem from heat exposure from the ground?
- Persistent licking or chewing paws
- Refusing to walk while off pavement
- Your dog is limping or resistant to walk
- Limping or irregular gait
Musher’s Secret All Natural Paw Protection Wax can be applied to the paw pads prior to heading out onto the hot pavement. When you arrive home, the product (along with unsanitary material from outside that might cling to the wax) are brought into your home on the dog’s paws. You might want to rinse off the paws with some water and a paper towel.
Especially when paw pads of your dog’s paws are vulnerable to dryness, cracking, and irritation from the hot ground, it’s a good idea to apply a little bit of balm onto the paw pads. There are several balms on the market. A great natural one is Paw Soother. It’s best to moisturize paw pads when your day has ended to allow it to penetrate the paw pads.
I would like to mention that a key element in keeping paw pads healthy is nutrition. I can usually get a pretty clear idea of the quality of a dog’s diet simply by examining the pads. I have tons of articles about food.
Features to look for in dog shoes:
- Rugged – A sturdy sole protects sensitive paws from sharp objects, heat, rubble, hot pavement, mud, and more.
- Available in many sizes – Allows for better fit
- Simple to take off – Putting on and taking off boots shouldn’t be a struggle – velcro, bungees, or zippers are great.
- Reflective – Reflective strips on the improves visiblity if you’re adventuring during dawn or dusk.
- High quality – You want them to last for a good, long time.
- Breathable – If you are planning on hot weather hiking or walking, a little air circulation will help keep your pup’s paws comfortable.
- Water Resistent – Keeps paws drier.
*I do NOT use the disposable rubber boots that resemble balloons; they are not made for the heat and they might break down and melt.
