Fabulous Illuminating Collars

Let me first tell you that I love these Catyapet devices!  When I first received them I put them into quarantine for over a week as everything should be put aside during this COVID-19 pandemic.  I tried a great assortment of these devices.  I was so excited when I finally took them out of quarantine.  Next I charged the collars; they come with their own USB cables.  They require charging after 3 – 6 hours depending upon which device and which settings you set.

I noticed they were big.  I mean REALLY big.  They measure around 40cm, 55cm, and 70cm depending upon the style and model.  I think that they are actually longer as I included the battery – control portion.  Well, my measurements came out different.  The My dogs are tiny and their necks measure 20cm around.  It was very easy to cut them down to customize the fit.  They are made with materials that won’t catch onto hair and they slide on.

The collars have three light settings.  One press onto the power button provides a stable glow of a color. A second press yields a fast flash of color.  A third press creates a slower flash.

I am very sensitive to odors so I smelled them right away and hardly noticed anything; they were practically odor-free. There are available in nice color options as well.  They are light as a feather so I doubt your dog will feel it when it’s on. The manufacturer states that they are waterproof, dust proof, and easy to clean.

The manufacturer states that they can be spotted from a distance as far as 500 meters, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they can be spotted at night from even further. These devices are life savers.  They make walking and playing with dogs safe when it is dark out.  Vehicles can easily spot the illumination from a distance away.  These are much better than reflector strips which require light to be seen.

Rubbery collars with cute pics:

The first one I tried was a hollow rubbery material.  These collars  come in several colors and have cute designs around them.  They come in two designs.  One is decorated with bones and paw prints.  The other has dogs and stars. They come in two widths – regular width size and a style that is more narrow.  Both devices are translucent and light shines through very well.  This style is designed to go over the dog’s head to go down to the neck.  One had 10 light settings and 4 had 3 light settings. They were great!

My friend Maggie who is a rescued Terrier mix wore it (she the black and white dog which appears at the top pic of this article).  Her owners love it.  They told me that she didn’t notice she was wearing it.  They pointed out that it enabled them to see where Maggie pooped so they could pick up after her.  When Maggie was walked in a very dark area at night it provided her owners with great visibility – not only could he see Maggie, but they were able to see around her. Without the illumination from the collar, her owners would have struggled to find their way.  When they were walking along the road, cars were able to see them.  Great product!!!

Cons:
-The part of the port cover that attaches the cover to the device is very short.  It pulls a little bit when lifted off the port.  This might cause the part of the cover that is attached to the device to tear off.

-The tab of the port cover is very small making it difficult to open.  It was so difficult that the I needed tweezers to open it when they wanted to charge them.

– Some dogs are afraid of having things put over their heads.  My friend’s dog wasn’t too thrilled about that.

Clear collars:

Next I tried the clear ones.  This one could easily be used as a bracelet or a collar. It is made from shiny plastic. They are flexible, but not as flexible as the others.  It is the most narrow.  It is also designed to put on over the head.  Not all humans like to walk around wearing cute designs so this one is the most “conservative” in appearance.  These are great.  I love them on my dogs.

Coated woven collars:

The next style is a rubbery plastic coated woven strap.  I would say it is like a traditional flat lupine collar that is coated with a slippery rubber-like material.

I am strongly opposed to using colors on dogs that are pullers. Leashed collars on pullers can cause health issues and injuries including a collapsed trachea (oh…  by the way, the thyroid is there and the spinal cord is also there – something to think about).  I like the closure though and the way this collar is  woven and coated.  It fits around a dog’s neck like a traditional collar.

Cons:
-The tester stated that the loop for the leash is very likely to break with her dogs which are very rambunctious Lab mixes.  That collar would be best suited to be used without a leash and to attach a leash to a separate collar or harness.  As far as the loop goes, I think it is great for holding tags.

-She also wasn’t sure how secure the clasp would be for dogs that are strong pullers.

-The port cover is also rather small.

The jewel:

The last device I can describe as being a hanging color ornament.  It has no cover over the USB port.  The manufacturer told me that it’s ok with water, but I chickened out of testing it in water.  It is made of a hard shiny plastic and is fastened to a collar loop.  At first, I couldn’t figure out where the power button was.  It is very neatly placed onto the device.  It blends in and looks like a facet so it is beautifully camouflaged. You can see it if you look at the device on an angle.

Cons:
-The tester who tried the jewel that hangs from the collar does not have a cover for the port.

-It didn’t light up the area as brightly as she would have liked.  In all fairness, she has a very large dog.  On a smaller dog that is closer to the ground, it might appear to laminate the sidewalk as well as the front of the dog. She didn’t find it bright enough for her dog.

-The clasp is not sturdy and the way it attaches to the device makes it more likely to break because there is no give.

All in all, the collars were a big hit.  They are well designed and could save lives. You can even cut them down for a teenager or an adult to wear as a bracelet for nighttime safety. The dogs did not notice they were wearing them.  They were very bright and comfortable. I give them a thumbs up!!!

Cutting the collars down was easy, but reattaching the devices was a little bit tricky.  The good thing about that is that it holds the collar together well.
