This Smart Dog Creates Formations Using Toys

Donnie the Doberman has a favorite activity.  He loves to arrange his toys in his backyard.  So what’s so special about that?  He arranges the toys in circles, rows, and triangles.  He Donnie Toys holdinghandscategorizes his toys and places them into various positions into well thought out patterns.  Dr. Barbara Smutts, a professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan felt compelled to see what was going on for herself.  She was very skeptical until she rigged the yard with a camera and saw Donnie decorating the yard as he loves to do.  Donnie is a very special dog in that he was rescued from a shelter.  Sadly, he spent around a year of his life in a small cage where he had a limited ability to move around.  After his owner adopted him, he had to adjust to his new environment.  He had physical difficulties due to being forced to live in such a small space.  Emotionally, Donnie was unfamiliar with warm interactions with humans.  Interestingly, the first time Donnie allowed his owner to put her arm around him marked the beginning of a new theme in his constellations.  His toys were arranged in positions in which they were holding hands, lying next to one another, sometimes facing up, other times facing down.  He uses various combinations of positions and patterns.  Could this activity simply be a form of entertainment for Donnie?  Could this be Donnie’s attempt at communication?    It might seem so considering his patterns were affected by the milestone in his relationship when he allowed his owner to interact more affectionately with him.  Could his behavior be an effort to communicate his emotions?  His behavior is expressed through the use of thinking skills that are very rare to find in a dog.

  1. I found this information very relevant to my own situation with my dog Zoey. She started making patterns with her toys about a month after she came to live with us after being in a shelter. She does this when we are not watching. At first we thought it was a coincidence but it happens every night or when we leave her alone in the house. Often the stuffed animals are found in a pattern that looks like they are holding hands or in a circle design or triangle. I would be very interested in learning more about this behavior.

    1. Hi Pattie-

First of all, thank you so much for visiting my website and for sharing. There is so much content on my site and I hope that you will find it to be helpful in keeping Zoe healthy.

I love to hear stories like this. Have you considered using a nanny-cam? Maybe you could catch her in the act! It sounds like Zoey has developed an understanding of relationships. Dogs never cease to amaze me (especially dogs who have been rescued from the pound). Zoey is obviously a real gem. If only she could speak!

      1. I just adopted a standard poodle from shelter who was thrown into the street with 5 other dogs. My son bought him lots of toys. Since I got him home he had been taking each toy and lining them up in the dining room around the table.. I didn’t notice it until a friend was visiting and told me what he was doing. He does this every day. What does this mean?

        1. Hi Lorie-

Thanks for visiting my blog. I have no idea what is going on with these dogs. They’re simply amazing. It’s like creating imaginary scenes or playing combination games.

Thanks for sharing your story. Also, above all else, thank you for adoption. I’d never consider getting a dog in any other way.

          Warmly,
          Janie

        1. Hi Barbette-

Thank you for visiting my website and for your comment. I must admit that I didn’t even take notice of the choke collar.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Nothing replaces good training.

      2. I have had our puppy for almost two weeks and I notice every night he puts all his toys on the shape of an L in his cage at first I thought it was a coincidence put it happens every night why would he be doing this. TAMMY

        1. Hi Tammy-

Thank you so much for visiting my website and for your comment. I’ve never heard of a puppy doing this. It’s pretty incredible that at such a young age your puppy is engaging in this type of behavior.

          Warmly,
          Janie

    2. My Labrador Mustang who is 5 years old and I have had since a puppy does the exact same thing, lines, parallel lines, circles. The toys are always touching, holding hands, all on their backs, tail to head, head to tail, always a pattern within a pattern.

      1. Hi Lisa-

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I love to hear about this stuff! It’s as if Mustang is trying to communicate a message. I wonder if when these dogs see people holding hands they recognize the same concept as they are creating when toys hold hands. These dogs are certainly recognizing body parts and connecting them. It is absolutely incredible!

      2. I have a 3 Yr old miniature schnauzer who we aqquired 2 yrs ago, she has a box full of various toys and every single day she takes one at a time out in the garden starting furthest away at bottom of garden and doesn’t stop until they are in a line up to the door, if we bring them in she just takes them out again and repeats process.

        1. Hi Heather-

Thank you for visiting my website and for sharing in your comment. It’s so interesting that she seems to make a path for herself. It almost like she’s making a Little Red Riding Hood trail in reverse!

        1. Hi Nikki-

Thank you for visiting my website. I hope you can get lots of healthy tips.

To me, the handholding is the most amazing arrangement. They are understanding body parts and transferring them to inanimate objects. They are creating relationships in their formations.

          Thanks again for your comment.

      3. Our Cocker Spaniel arranges his toys. I say he is practicing his geometry, lol. He does circles, triangles, lines, double lines and large V formations. He has even done squares a few times. His spacing between his toys is very balanced and most of the time he has the heads of his toys facing the same direction. Ha ha.

I will pile his toys on his bed and go make coffee. I come back a few minutes later, and he has his toys in lines or some other shape.

        1. Hi there-

Thank you for visiting my website and for sharing your story. I would love if my dogs would do this! It must be fun to give your dog toys and when you return to the room, they are all placed in an orderly manner.

          Thanks again
          Warmly,
          Janie

        2. Thank you for sharing, my dog does the same thing. At first I called the sheriff, I thought I was being pranked. The sheriff said No Dog does this. Well my dog does

    3. I am so very glad I googled this phenomenon, I will go on to detail my recent experiences with my little 5 year old Border Terrier, Bailey, tomorrow, too late now. I will sleep better, tonight, though, knowing that am NOT crazy! lol night all…..

      1. Hi Cindi-

Thank you so much for reading my articles. It is amazing that people are coming out of the woodwork and sharing their stories. When you share these things with other people it is easy to feel embarrassed and to question yourself. Bailey has a gift and it is very real. Send my regards to Bailey!

      2. Our rescue, Gus, also arranges his toys in patterns. Another thing he does is have a favorite toy for a while and won’t play with or “fetch” any toy but that one. Often it’s his newest toy but not always. When we got him, he buried everything, in the yard and in the couch. He rarely buries now but enjoys “finding” a toy I’ve covered up for him.

        1. Hi Clare-

Thank you for visiting my blog. I always appreciate when people stop by.

Gus seems to be quite a character. He has some unique behaviors that he does (and doesn’t) engage in.

I have always adopted my dogs. I appreciate when people do the same.

          Warmly,
          Janie

          Thanks for sharing

        2. Hello,
I had to google this phenomenon. My newly adopted two year old pit bull terrier terrier Abu has been arranging his toys as well and he likes to organize them very neatly in a straight row most times but he has two toys that he places together as if they were sister and brother or best friends.
I’ve photographed it and everyone keeps telling me that it’s a coincidence or that I possibly organized his toys and didn’t remember. My sweet boy also had a traumatic life before coming home with me and my husband. I think that I may just have to get a nanny cam also thanks so much for your page. ☺️

          1. Hi Taj-

First of all, thank you so much for visiting my website. I love your comment. I am sure that so many people out there have the same experience and it’s frustrating when you see something and other people don’t believe it.

It sounds like your pittie found a happy home. I am a huge proponent of adoption. I personally have a special feeling about dogs that are adopted and people who adopt them. There seems to be something different about dogs who are adopted. It’s as if they appreciate it.

Your dog is very special. For the life of me I cannot figure out the reason why some dogs arrange their toys. I wonder what goes through their minds.

Again, thank you so much for sharing your story. I certainly do believe you! Please check out my articles about health and wellness. I have plenty of stuff about nutrition and about vaccines.

    4. My dog (Emmie) put her toys in a circle with her favorite ball outside of the circle and I saw on the web that they put an animal toy outside the circle.

      1. Hi Leah-

Thanks for visiting my blog and for sharing your story. It’s interesting that she leaves the ball outside of the circle. I wonder if it’s because dogs typically don’t like to be closed in on so it’s a way of allowing the to to not be boxed in. I wander if part of it is that she’s an Aussie (a herding dog).

        Hmmm

        All the best-

        1. Harley, my long-haired chihuahua, rearranges his toys everyday. He sets them in circles, squares, parallel lines, and in groups of 2, 3 and 4. His big chicken is always at the head of the group.

I never see him arranging his toys, but every day is a treat to see how they are arranged. I leave the toys out because this is his domain, his kingdom so to speak. That is Harley’s little corner of the world. Unfortunately, we underestimate the intelligence of our furry children.

          1. Hi Virginia-

Thank you so much for sharing your story about Harley. Yes, we absolutely underestimate our dogs. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are coming out of the woodwork about their dogs making such constellations.

            Thanks for visiting my website.
            Warmly,

    5. My male shorkie always designs his treats in threes and triangles when no one’s watching and he does it almost every night. I am curious what it means as well.

      1. Hi Sheryl-

Thank you so much for writing and for visiting my website.

The stories never cease to amaze me. I’m hearing more and more of them – your dog included! We understand that there are dogs who do this, but I want to know when there will be an answer to why!

Thank you for sharing your story about your incredible dog.

        Warmly,
        Janie

    6. We have a 5 month old yorkie poo. We have woke up to design with her toys. At first I thought my daughter was doing it. Finelly ask her why are u doing that,of course her answer was thought u did. So that resolved. We know now it’s her. We have never caught her. She does different patterns each day. Bought her from a puppy mill as we felt sorry for the conditions she lived in. We are so happy to have her, brings lots of joy too our lives.

      1. Hi P.

Every time I hear the stories, it’s hard to believe that they’re true. It is so fascinating how dogs can do this. I wonder what goes through their minds when they’re engaging in this activity.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and thank you so much for visiting my website.

        Warmly,
        Janie

    7. My long hair chihuahua does this too! Mostly triangles, but she has done squares and diamonds. Once she did an arrow – a triangle with a long straight line at the bottom. I waa glad to find out I am not the only one. She is very smart.

      1. Hi Vicki-

Thank you so much for sharing your story and for checking out my website.

That’s incredible! The arrow is something new to me. Was it pointing at anything or anywhere that something occurred? I’m wondering if she saw a squirrel or something there the day before. It’s amazing! Why do you think she drew an arrow?

        Warmly,

      1. Hi Kim-

  2. I have a goldendoodle that puts her toys into geometric shapes daily. Lines two plastic bones parallel, then has them forming a right angle, next she may get another toy and they are in a perfect triangle. This usually happens several times throughout the day. We’ve had her since she was seven weeks old and she’s close to three years old now.

    1. Hi Craig-

    thank you
    karen

    1. Hi Karen-

You are not the only one! As you can see, others are coming forth and commenting as well. I wonder why some dogs do this stuff while other dogs don’t. Thanks for sharing your story. It is fascinating.

  4. I just found my 3 year old chihuahua laying her kibble in a semi circle this morning, quite far from the bowl. I’d never seen her do that before. It freaked me out! Never with her toys although sometimes I can’t find her mini tennis ball and then I see she’s put it back in her toy bin!

    1. Hi Lulu-

Thanks for checking out my website. I have many articles about food that you might want to check out.
That’s so cool with the kibble. Do you think she saw this article? LOL
Does she always put her kibble into a different place? Some dogs do that. Laying it out in shapes and patterns is pretty cool. If she does it on a few occasions I would guess that it is deliberate. Very interesting.

I think the greatest thing about your comment is that you catch her putting her mini ball back!
If she could do that, I wonder if your super doggie could do windows too!!! I wish my girl, Beverly would put her toys away.

      Thanks for writing.

      1. I had a schaunzer that grew up with my daughter and when we sang the cleanup song from barney my daughter and dog would pick up the toys

        1. Hi Tammy-

Thanks for visiting my website and for sharing your story.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a dog helping to clean up. I’m cracking up right now as I’m visualizing your dog lending a hand (paw).

  5. Hi Janie-
I have a 7 month old Black Mouth Cur we got at 12 weeks. I just started noticing this week she sorts her toys in groups. This Tue I came home from work and she had toys all around inside the house in groups of three. 6 sets of 3. Wednesday morning when I woke up she had groups of 2, 11 groups to be exact. Thursday when I got home from work it was singles. Maggie likes to steal shoes also, but always right shoes and one week for a few days about 3 weeks back she played only with white toys. I am so fascinated as to why she does this? We have a 5 yr old lab at home also but she’s never done this it’s all about the ball for her.

    1. Hi Kelly-

Thanks for visiting my website. I’m sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you. It is so amazing that your dog can do that!!! What a surprise to come home to such surprises. Dogs never cease to amaze me.

With regard to the shoes, is she attracted to everybody’s right shoes? This is the first time I have heard about this one. Wow!!!

      Thanks again
      Janie

    2. My dog arranges my shoes at night while I sleep. He might arrange them in right angles, sometimes he creates a kind of fort around his bed, and sometimes he’ll arrange them parallel/alternating. It’s a wonderful gist to ranked you to his creations in the morning. Would love to know what it means psychologically.

      1. Hi Felicia-

Thank you so much for visiting my website and four commenting.

Now that’s a first! I got a kick out of reading your comment. I have no idea what these things mean. I have a feeling it’s just a way for them to pass time, but I wonder what makes some dogs do it and some dogs not do it. I wonder if all dogs have that ability or just some.it’s so interesting to hear about these experiences.

Please check out my articles about health and nutrition. I’m sure it would be of interest.

        Warmly,

  6. We have a 16 month old probably ShihTzu x Jack Russell that we rescued @ age 12 months. Recently found her arranging things. Was surprised to see her arrange a line of toys and put the only 2 identical toys together. We do not see her do it and it does not happen daily but when we least expect it…

    1. Hi Nancy-

Thanks for visiting my website and for your sharing your story. It’s amazing! I love hearing about this stuff!!! I wonder why some dogs do it and some dogs don’t. Hmmm. It must be a lot of fun to come home to little surprises like that!

  7. I came here because of the same wonder. Our pure breed Shih Tzu is arranging our slippers symmetrically. It happens when we are sleeping at night. Our slippers are not in place probably because we just remove them off our feet right before we go to bed. We deliberately scatter them to test if what will happen again the next day. And behold, we would wake up with the slippers in right pairs in perfectly symmetrical pattern close to the door of the comfort room. We sleep with our Shih Tzu in my room so there is no one else in the room but her.

    1. Hi Ana-

Thank you for coming to my website and for sharing your experience with me and my readers. The slippers thing is a new one. I laughed out loud as I read your comment. I was thinking that it would be fun to see if your dog can match socks. It would make laundry time more fun lol! The things dogs do are amazing and surprising sometimes.

  8. My neighbors have a springer spaniel named Mollie. She is three. I have documented her toy arrangements at #mollietoygeo on Instagram. Some of her arrangements are very complex.

    1. Hi Cindy-

Thanks you for stopping by and visiting my website.

It’s pretty incredible. I often wonder what goes on in their heads. I thought that there were only a couple of dogs doing this type of thing, but it seems that there are more than I imagined. It’s simply amazing!

  9. Hi! My 2 year old Boxer/Pit Remi will take all of the toys (we have 2 of each, one for each dog) she will put matching toys together and lay them out in a line. I’ve also noticed she gets very upset when her daily routine is not the same.

    1. Hi Logan-

Thanks for visiting my website and for sharing your story. It amazes me how dogs can do these things. There’s so much we don’t know about them.

      Thanks again.

  10. HI After seeing this behavior repeatedly with much amazement I had to search it out. My dog is a mini dachshund Ella. She is tiny and weighs only 10 pounds. I saw this pattern a few months ago and thought ok well its just a quirky thing. Then After having her fixed 3 weeks ago she has been doing this a few times a week. Either in my TV room or in my master bedroom. Which both have places to sleep for her and a toy area (bin). She’s extremely protective of her toys and seems to count them one by one daily as well. Given a brand new toy she will hover over it take it took her rest area and not let anyone near it for at least 24 hrs. Then we find them in a line – sometimes straight sometimes curved. I only wish there was a way to know what this amazing phenomenon is.

    1. Hi Angel-

Thanks for visiting my blog and for commenting. It is amazing how some dogs can do these things. I wonder if all dogs can do it, but most choose not to or if only a number of dogs can do it. Thanks for sharing your story. Please feel free to check out my health and nutrition articles as well.

      1. I’ve had my shelter dog, a Havanese less than a month. He is very loving and suddenly today, he lined up his toys in a straight line. About an hour or two later, his toys were in a circle. My previous dog, also a Havanese rescue, arranged his toys too! What mysterious fun!!!

        1. Hi Brenda!

Thank you for checking out my blog. It astounds me what these dogs can do. Thank you for adopting a dog. I believe it’s the greatest thing a person can do when they get a pet. It must’ve been quite a surprise when you saw what your dog created.

  11. I like how I found this article. My dachshund does similar things with her kibble. She will makes triangles or line them up by three or fours. When I have moved one, she moves it back

    1. Hi Gaby-

Thank you for visiting my website and sharing your experience. It is sticking how many people have noticed their dogs doing this. It’s interesting that they only do it when nobody is around. I am glad that the video in my article was made, because it shows that it is real.

  12. My Shih Tzu “Shugg” does something similar with his little animals. I initially thought it was a coincidence because he does it when we aren’t looking or when no one is home with him. He has a tiny pig, an elephant, a monkey, and a dinosaur stuffed animals. He lines them up in a row and sits them all up making sure they’re all holding hands. I got intrigued by his behavior that I started to research it and ended up here. I think this is genius that dogs can actually do this. I’m now wondering what the message behind it may be.

    1. Hi Dalia-

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my website.

Your dog is incredible. It is amazing what dogs can do. I’m just wondering why it seems that they do these things when people aren’t around. I would love to see a dog do it in front of me. I think that would be so cool to watch in person.

      All the best,
      Janie

  13. I was so excited to run across your site today. I was googling what does it mean when your dog puts his toys into geometric designs and voila, I got your video. I see this video is older. This is 6/2021. How is Donnie? Is he still creating art?
I have a rescue that was tarred and a kind lady stopped by the side of the road in pouring cold rain and picked him up. Fast forward, I was fortunate to get him. He like Donnie did not know what toys were, how to ride in a car, how to eat or drink out of a bowl, walk on a leash, etc. This was 12/22/20. We noticed about a month ago, that he was placing his toys into lines, triangles, snake formations, then more intricate designs. He placed himself into the middle of one of his designs and carried on until I looked and then took his picture. About a week ago, I decided to start taking pics of his designs. By looking at these pics, I could see patterns. His animals always had his favorite toys by the animals. He also would put a toy of a food by the animals too. I should have taken more interest at first and taken pics of how he advanced his skills. Like Donnie he shakes his toys and throws them into the air to start a new pattern. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was and am to run across your video of Donnie. I think this is a way that our dogs are trying to tell us how much they love us and show this love to their animal toys. I feel very fortunate to have a dog like Bentley as you do with your Donnie who is a beautiful dog! I wish I knew how to put Bentley’s pic of him inserting himself into his design.
Best of luck with Donnie. Let me know more about him since this video was made.

    1. Hi Rose Mary!

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and thank you so much for your comments and the great story that you shared with us. Donnie is not my dog. He is a dog I found out about online. It seems like people are coming out of the woodwork with dogs who do these interesting activities. I get a kick out of hearing the stories.

Please check out my articles about health and nutrition. It’s important to give our dogs the best we can are able to.

We are amazed by Diego. We call him little Picasso.
We noticed this when we got him in January this 2021.
He is so creative and blows us away. I wish I could post his toy art work.

    Regards,
    Suzanne

  15. My. Shi tzu used to arrange my shoes in a semi circle in closet. She did that for a few weeks. If i fixed them she redid to her liking a few weeks later she passed away at 8 years old, so this next part got me scared. We have a rescue who is a schnauzer mix. He will be 8 oct 1st. This morning all his toys are are in a circle all faces up and all heads are facing in to the circle. This got me very nervous .
LEO is an awesome dog but he only plays sometimes ,

    1. Hi Marlene-

Thanks for visiting my blog and for sharing your story. Arranging the shoes is a new one! How interesting! To find another dog who is also engages in such unique behaviors is astounding.

      Thanks again for writing.

      Warmly,

      1. Thank.you I sure thought we had a spook in the house. He must do this at night time when we are asleep. It is spooky. My niece even asked if there was a ghost.
I just dont understand it all.

  16. I wonder if the behavior is a response to trauma. I am a trauma survivor and find that cleaning and organizing my environment gives me a sense of control and calm. I wonder if the pups do the same to help with their anxiety? I noticed today that my rescue blue heeler, who was severely abused, is lining up his toys in the yard. He also has to carry one in his mouth on walks.

    1. Hi Lori-

Thanks for visiting my website and for your comment. Your idea is a fascinating one. I never considered it. I wonder if it could be a combo of that and a sweet, loving activity that explores relationships. It’s amazing to see some of the intricate arrangements – like toys holding hands.

Thanks again for visiting my blog. Please check out my articles about food. Barfworld Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) is an excellent choice. It’s very easy preparation and one of the best food around.

      1. Well today Rita made a new design of toys. She likes to make triangles from toys. She also does perfectly straight lines and circles, but it took me a couple of minute to realize this is also 3 triangles – at first I thought it was a w! She must be very proud of this one cos it has been here all morning. I was relieved when I found out she is not the only dog doing this – a university Professor in the US is studying another dog who makes shapes. Here is a link: [Link deleted]

        1. Hi Vicki-

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and thank you for your comment. I love when people share their stories.

That’s incredible! I’ve received quite a few comments from others who have read this post and have had similar experiences. It’s amazing what dogs can do. Rita sounds like a terrific dog.

There is a dog named Chaser, who is a border collie. Her owner is a professor who has studied Chaser’s behaviors. His owner has studied chaser for many years. Chaser creates interesting formations. These dogs are so fascinating!

  17. Hi I had a 14 year old schnauzer who would line his toys up all his life. He would choose certain ones to sleep and cuddle with. He passed away on
December 9,2022. I got a new puppy schnauzer from a different breeder she started making 4 piles with the toys. What I noticed was she would put the toys that had long arms and legs together. Then another would be flat crinkly toys and stuffed larger animal toys. She was 4 months when she started this .she makes a big circle and she lays in the middle with one toy . Puts that back in her circle gets another one. As I’m writing this she has taken her blanket and dragged it in the circle. She seems to be very smart I potty trained her in about less than a day. Hasn’t had an accident since then. She will be 5 months old on January 20, 2023. Do I have an Einstein puppy on my hands

  18. got a new puppy schnauzer
She started this at 4 months old. making 4 piles with the toys. What I noticed was she would put the toys that had long arms and legs together. Then another would be flat crinkly toys and stuffed larger animal toys.
She sometimes makes a big circle with her toys, placing them a certain way. She will lay in the middle with one toy . Puts that back in her circle gets another one. As I’m writing this she has taken her blanket and dragged it in the circle. She seems to be very smart I potty trained her in less than a day to go out pee pee and poopy. Hasn’t had an accident since then. She will be 5 months old on January 20, 2023. Do I have an Einstein puppy on my hands. She also loves FaceTime with my son and his wife along with their 2 schnauzer once she looked behind the phone to see where they went when the dogs jumped down. She amazes me everyday.

    1. Hi Sharon-

Thank you for visiting my website and for your comment.

I thought that the dogs who do this are more mature. That’s amazing that he is so young and doing that. It must be fun to see what she comes up with each time you walk into the area she creates those constellations.

      Warmly,

  19. My dog (Labrador retriever) who we’ve had since 8 weeks, creates huge lines with stones. Would love to share a video and pictures!

  20. Hello, Janie –
Our Pomeranian puppy lines up like items and puts any that don’t match outside the lineup. Do we have a prodigy?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

  21. Hi Janie – Thank you for your reply. My puppy has just started a new activity, which is to transfer the cat poop from the litter box onto his pee pads. What’s up with that? It’s baffling!

  22. My dog Bailey who was a rescue dog at the age about 7-8months starting putting his favorite toys in a straight line about a year ago. One day I gently moved his ball out of line. He jumped off the couch and put it back!! He is very friendly with people and other dogs and loves to play. We have had dogs for over 40 years and I have never experienced this before.

    1. Hi Sharon,
Bailey is a very unique dog. You must be very proud. I love these stories because they are so inspiring. It makes me feel bad Dogs understand so much and have such deep comprehension.
